Symbolism

I think there are several symbolisms associated to Mokona Modoki, in a CLAMP fashion. I'll go through the most important points.

Duality and yin-yang

It's not because of the black and white colors. Everything about the way they look makes me think about complementary opposites. Lightness and darkness in the fur color; that one is obvious. Also, in CLAMP illustrations, it's common for them to take red and blue as opposite colors (for instance, in Tokyo Babylon or X.) If we see Clow's guardians in CCS, Cerberus and Yue, you''l notice their colors contrast as well (golden and red from Kero, silver and purple blue from Yue.) So why shouldn't Soel and Larg contrast as well?

But also notice they do embody active vs. passive. Soel is yang, the active force, while Larg is yin, the passive force.

And the pendants are in different ears. That way, if they look at each other up front, it seems like an inverted mirror, visually speaking.

Sun and Moon

A subcategory of the previous argument, but it deserves to be mentioned apart. Clow used solar and lunar magic all the same, and that's why some of his cards have a certain polarity associated to them. He has a sun guardian and a moon guardian. Even after he died, his reincarnation created his own sun and moon guardians.

I think this didn't escape Mokona's creation, even it's not canonically proved. But please notice this in the CLAMP no Kiseki box.

Considering the sun is yang and the moon is yin in philosophy, we shouldn't be surprised of this. Also, Yuuko was a Moon sorceress, and she kept Larg. Clow was a Dark sorcerer, yeah, but he used a staff with a golden sun in it. Meanwhile, Soel went with Clow's descendants. I want to add that I think Soel slightly behaves like daddy Clow, while Larg is a lot like mommy Yuuko. I think it's something curious.

Norse runes

The pendants have something written and drawn in them. While Clow and Yuuko explain they are magical symbols, that each character has its own meaning and strong power attached to it, it's easy to figure them out. They're runes from the Norse alphabet.

Vikings and Scandinavians in general didn't use their runes just as writing symbols. For them, runes had magic. The god Odin had to sacrifice his own eye (*cough*) in order to obtain the runes. And also, they used it for fortune telling. It's still usual to use stones or wood tablets with runes carved in them as an oracle.

Interesting enough, the Norse name of the runes drawn in the pendants sound creepily similar to Mokona Modoki's real names. The rune in the red stone is called Sowilo, while the one in the blue stone is called Laguz. I'm betting one of my kidneys the name CLAMP Clow came up with is a derivation of the rune names. That should explain why are they rambling about how powerful those names (Soel and Larg) are. Yes, I'm aware the text in the image is different, but the true name of the runes are those ones.

The meaning of the runes in divination is also curious, as they remind me of the series they come from and their main characters.

For TRC and Syaoran, Sowilo: (S: The sun.) Success, goals achieved, honor. The life-force, health. A time when power will be available to you for positive changes in your life, victory, health, and success. Contact between the higher self and the unconscious. Wholeness, power, elemental force, sword of flame, cleansing fire. Reverse (negative) Sowilo: False goals, bad counsel, false success, gullibility, loss of goals. Destruction, retribution, justice, casting down of vanity. Wrath of god.

For HOLiC and Kimihiro Watanuki, Laguz: (L: Water, or a leek.) Flow, water, sea, a fertility source, the healing power of renewal. Life energy and organic growth. Imagination and psychic matters. Dreams, fantasies, mysteries, the unknown, the hidden, the deep, the underworld. Success in travel or acquisition, but with the possibility of loss. Reverse (negative) Laguz: An indication of a period of confusion in your life. You may be making wrong decisions and poor judgements. Lack of creativity and feelings of being in a rut. Fear, circular motion, avoidance, withering. Madness, obsession, despair, perversity, sickness, suicide.

You'll agree with me, this *cannot* be random.
